Same old, same old. What could we say? For 75 minutes until Gervinho’s red card, Arsenal dominated possession but failed to make it count. Newcastle, to their credit, defended resolutely and came away with the minimum point they were looking for.
In a scene reminiscent of last season opening game, our new signing got red-carded. Seems worrying if this is to be a tradition, but hey, that would be for next season right?
In a game voided of clear-cut chances and a sent-off, there were some positives to take. Arshavin provided, or rather tried to provide some Cesc-passes, which were either unsuccessful, or the recipient’s first touch letting them down. Up is the only way left for him, seeing that any further down for him would be to drill right through the surface of the other end to get back up.
Our new signing Gervinho looks encouraging. He looked lively, loves to run with the ball and gave Newcastle backline food for thought. So much so that Barton the flying cunt, had to manhandled Gervinho and instigated the brawl which led to Gervinho tapping Barton’s face. Video can be seen at here.
This incident was disgraced by the fact that Gervinho received a red card while Joey Barton only got shown the yellow card. You don’t pull and drag someone about as though you own him like that. Absolutely poor decision by the referee and his linesman. That said, Gervinho should have kept his cool and lured Barton into punching him instead. Not smart play by the Ivorian and now we are set to lose him for the next 3 premier league game, being Liverpool, ManUtd and Swansea. I guess the bright spot would be Gervinho being rested enough for the Champion League qualifier matches. Gervinho had better performs.
The back four must be given due credit too, especially after the red card. Special mention must go to Vermaelen and Koscielny. In face of pressure from Newcastle, they kept their cool and reduced Newcastle to a few long range shots by Ba*ton, which were wildly hit and wide of goal.
Yet, we must bear in mind that this is in fact a poor Newcastle team. Liverpool are vastly improved, and ManUtd are the reigning champions.
All in all, it was a decent game, not helped by gervinho’s red. Considering the sent off, and being away from home, 0-0 is not bad. Defense, marshalled superbly by Vermaleen gave us a clean sheet. The season is still long, but much improvement is needed for Arsenal.
